Before you Build Concept #3: Stop Decorating What You Have Not Yet Defined

Clarity and Foundation Come First

Yesterday we talked about understanding your customer.

Today, I’d like to ask a different question.

Have you ever invested significant time and energy into making something look impressive… before you were completely clear on what you were actually building?

Many aspiring business owners spend weeks…

Designing a logo.

Choosing brand colors.

Building a website.

Researching software.

Comparing CRMs.

Creating social media accounts.

Setting up automations.

None of those things are wrong.

In fact, many of them are important.

But are they the first decisions?

Imagine leaving a pre-construction meeting where the architect is still developing the plans, the engineers are still coordinating their drawings, and the construction documents have not yet been finalized…

…then stopping on the way home to order a pink couch because you believe that’s what the brand is all about.

It sounds out of order, doesn’t it?

Most people would never furnish a building before knowing exactly what was being built.

Yet we often do exactly that in business.

We choose the logo.

The website.

The software.

The CRM.

The social media platforms.

The automations.

Before we’ve clearly defined what we’re actually building.

There is only one problem.

The foundation isn’t complete.

The purpose hasn’t been fully defined.

The customer isn’t fully understood.

The experience you’re trying to create is still taking shape.

The pink couch may be the perfect choice.

But you don’t know that yet.

Let me be clear.

This doesn’t mean branding isn’t important.

It doesn’t mean technology isn’t important.

It doesn’t mean systems, automation, or AI aren’t important.

They are.

But there is an order to building.

A beautiful brand cannot explain an offer that hasn’t been clarified.

A powerful system cannot fix a process that hasn’t been defined.

Automation cannot decide what should be automated.

And more tools do not automatically create more clarity.

The stronger the foundation, the more effective everything built upon it becomes.

Before adding another platform…

Another subscription…

Another system…

Or another pink couch…

Return to the foundation.

Ask yourself:

What am I actually building?

Who am I building it for?

What problem am I solving?

What transformation is my customer looking for?

Then let your brand…

Your technology…

Your systems…

And your tools…

Support what you’ve already defined.

Because…

There is an order to building.

Today’s Builder’s Question

Have you ever invested time or money into something you later realized you weren’t ready for because the foundation wasn’t fully defined?

I’d love to hear your experience in the comments.

Until next time, stay blessed!
